Soongsil University Graduate Student Kim Su-bin Wins Poster Award at ASME International Conference

[Financial News] Soongsil University announced on the 2nd that Kim Su-bin, a master's student on Professor Yoon Heon-jun's mechanical engineering research team, won the Graduate Student Poster Award at an international conference hosted by The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
Kim received the Graduate Student Poster Award at the ASME 2026 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC-CIE), held from the 23rd to the 26th of last month in Houston, Texas.
Kim presented, as the first author, research using scientific machine learning (SciML) to predict how the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) declines during repeated operation.
Scientific machine learning combines established scientific knowledge, such as the laws of physics, with data-driven artificial intelligence (AI) training. In this study, the technology was applied to predict performance degradation in polarization curves, which show the voltage-current characteristics of fuel cells. The research team explained that the findings demonstrate the potential for using AI in the future to predict the performance of energy systems and analyze their reliability.
The research was conducted with support from the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP)'s Global Talent Development for the New Energy Industry (Overseas Linkage) Program. Kim was dispatched to the University of Florida, where Kim conducted joint research with Professor Kim Nam-ho's research team.
