Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon Walks the Streets at Night... Inspects Lighting Levels and CCTV Blind Spots in Yeon-dong, Jeju City

[Financial News Jeju = Reporter Jeong Yong-bok] In Jeju, where concerns over public safety and recent missing-person cases have intensified, the governor personally walked through nighttime streets in tourist-dense areas to inspect streetlight brightness, CCTV blind spots, and the functionality of emergency bells. Jeju Special Self-Governing Province plans to re-examine the dark sections and vulnerable facility locations identified on-site to install additional streetlights and improve lighting levels.
According to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on the 2nd, Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon patrolled the area around Sammu Park and Nuwemaru Street in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, on foot for about 40 minutes starting at 7:15 p.m. on the 1st.
This on-site inspection was a follow-up measure to the 'Meeting of Relevant Agencies to Establish Measures for a Safe Jeju' held on August 27. At that time, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and related agencies discussed joint nighttime patrols of vulnerable areas, the identification of CCTV blind spots, and measures to strengthen safety inspections in areas densely populated with tourists.
Governor Wi, accompanied by officials from the Provincial Safety and Health Office, the Tourism and Exchange Bureau, and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Agency, departed from the eastern entrance of Sammu Park, traveled through Nuwemaru Street, and reached the vicinity of the Korea Land and Geospatial InformatiX Corporation (LX).
The inspection was conducted from the perspective of actual users. Governor Wi examined the installation locations of CCTVs and monitoring blind spots in each section, and personally verified the brightness of streetlights and surrounding lighting.
He also pressed the emergency bell himself. He checked whether it connected to the CCTV Integrated Control Center as soon as the bell was activated and, while speaking with the control operator, verified whether the scene was properly captured on the monitoring screen.
It was confirmed that lighting was relatively insufficient in some sections of Nuwemaru Street. Areas where the actual pedestrian walkway became dark because of wide spacing between streetlights or trees blocking the light were also included in the inspection.
Field feedback indicated that insufficient surrounding lighting could reduce the visibility of nighttime CCTV footage and consequently lower monitoring efficiency.
Governor Wi ordered a review of illumination standards that reflect actual pedestrian environments, noting that applying only the current uniform streetlight installation standards could result in dark sections depending on local conditions.
For commercial areas with high nighttime pedestrian traffic, streetlights and other lighting will be reinforced to match usage times and pedestrian volume. For sections where traffic needs to be restricted, measures using lighting and signage to clearly delineate movement routes will also be considered.
During the patrol, not only safety facilities but also road conditions were inspected. Governor Wi identified damaged asphalt on a section of Nuwemaru Street and ordered prompt repairs to ensure that pedestrians and vehicles could pass safely.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province plans to share the risk factors identified that day with relevant departments and agencies and begin follow-up measures. For sections with insufficient brightness, it will decide whether to install additional streetlights or reinforce illumination after conducting on-site investigations.
It will also continue identifying CCTV and lighting blind spots, focusing on areas densely populated with tourists and residential districts with high nighttime pedestrian traffic. Crime and accident reports will be analyzed together with on-site patrol results to inform the selection of facilities requiring improvement and patrol routes.
This on-site inspection also coincides with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province's recent decision to transform its monthly policy meetings into 'Safety Jeju Strategy Meetings.' Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is pursuing the safety management of solo travelers, patrols of tourist sites such as Jeju Olle Trail routes and volcanic cones, and improvements to nighttime pedestrian environments as key daily-life and tourism safety initiatives.
Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon said, "The foundation of nighttime safety lies in ensuring sufficient lighting," adding, "I will personally inspect risk factors on the ground and make improvements starting with the areas that need them so that residents and tourists alike can move around with peace of mind."
