A 'Vietnamese refugee' became the U.S. Secretary of the Navy

[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao, a Vietnamese refugee, to serve as the official Secretary of the Navy.
On the 1st (local time), President Donald Trump announced the nomination of the Secretary of the Navy via social media and urged the Senate to confirm it quickly.
Nominee Hung Cao, who escaped Vietnam with his family in the 1970s and settled in the United States, graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He ran as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Virginia in 2024 with the support of President Donald Trump, but was defeated.
He subsequently served as Under Secretary of the Navy and has been acting Secretary of the Navy since last April. His predecessor, former Secretary John Phelan, had a strained relationship with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
The nomination of the Secretary of the Navy came as the war with Iran had been going on for more than six months.
The U.S. Navy is playing a key role, including blockading Iranian ports, as the United States and Iran face off over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
