"Connecting Future Industries and R&D" Chuncheon Steps Up Efforts to Establish the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology

【Financial News Chuncheon = Kim Ki-seop】Chuncheon is stepping up efforts to establish the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology as a regional innovation platform connecting Gangwon State’s future industries with research and development.
On the second, Chuncheon held a final briefing at City Hall on a research project for the institute’s founding plan and shared the findings and basic proposal. The project was launched to define the institute’s direction and develop a model linked to Gangwon State’s industrial, educational, and research infrastructure. The Gangwon Research Institute analyzed similar cases at home and abroad as well as regional conditions, examining the institute’s vision and functions, research fields, education system, organizational and operational plans, and regional cooperation strategies.
The study proposed that the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology serve as an R&D hub that expands research achievements into industrial value by connecting the capabilities of local universities, research institutions, and companies, rather than competing with existing universities or replacing their functions. To this end, discussions focused on developing talent and strengthening R&D in fields related to Gangwon’s 5 poles and 3 special zones growth engine. The plan also considered linking the institute with industrial infrastructure across the province, including R&D special zones, Corporate Innovation Parks, and industrial complexes, to create a virtuous cycle from talent development to R&D, technology commercialization, and corporate growth.
Under the plan, the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology would attract outstanding research talent to the region and serve as a regional innovation platform connecting technologies developed by universities and research institutions with companies and industries.
Chuncheon plans to refine the basic proposal based on opinions presented at the final briefing and further specify the feasibility of the institute, candidate sites, its scale, and operating system. It also plans to broaden support for the institute’s establishment through consultations with Gangwon State, the central government, and relevant organizations.
Mayor Yuk Dong-han said, "It is most important to create a structure in which local universities, research institutions, and companies are organically connected and grow together." He added, "We will refine the basic plan and continue discussions on the institute’s establishment so that the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology can take root as a new foundation for growth linking Gangwon State’s future industries with research and development."
