HUFS Institute of Middle East Studies Selected for Humanities Korea 3.0 Project; Four Universities to Receive 12 Billion Won Over Six Years

[Financial News]  The Institute of Middle East Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) has been selected for a new project under the National Research Foundation of Korea’s Humanities Korea 3.0 Support Project. The consortium, led by HUFS and involving research institutes at Myongji University, Dankook University, and Busan University of Foreign Studies (BUFS), will receive approximately 12 billion won in research funding over six years.
HUFS announced on the 2nd that a consortium formed by the Institute of Middle East Studies, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the Institute of Middle East Studies at Myongji University, the GCC Countries Research Institute at Dankook University, and the Mediterranean Region Institute at Busan University of Foreign Studies had been selected for a consortium-type project under the Humanities Korea 3.0 Support Project.
The research topic is “Establishing a Korean-Style Humanities Framework for Middle East Studies in an Era of Civilizational Transformation: Reconsidering Changes in Middle Eastern Societies and Their Contemporary Adaptation.” The project aims to analyze the processes and background of change in Middle Eastern societies and establish a Middle East studies framework from a Korean perspective, distinct from existing Western-centered research.
The research will proceed in stages. In the first stage, the researchers will analyze the historical factors behind changes in Middle Eastern societies to establish a theoretical foundation for the project. In the second stage, they plan to use that foundation to examine changes in the contemporary Middle Eastern situation and major issues from a Korean perspective. The four university research institutes will conduct joint research across five subprojects. They will also build a digital archive of their findings and train the next generation of scholars. Programs to share the research results with the public through lectures and cultural events will also be launched.
Established in 1976, the Institute of Middle East Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has conducted research on the politics, economy, society, and culture of the Middle East.
