HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Wins Jang Young-shil Award for LCO2 Carrier with Triple the Transport Capacity

[Financial News] HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 2nd that it had won the IR52 Jang Young-shil Award for its liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier technology, which triples transport capacity. The IR52 Jang Young-shil Award is presented by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Industrial Technology Association (KOITA), with one product or technology selected each week for 52 weeks a year.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries recently developed a low-pressure cargo system for LCO2 carriers and built the world’s largest carrier, tripling its transport capacity. The vessel was delivered in January to the Greek shipping company Capital Clean Energy Carriers.
The technology enables the bulk transport of LCO2 at an ultra-low temperature and low pressure of minus 50 degrees Celsius and 7 atmospheres. Previously, LCO2 was transported at minus 30 degrees Celsius and 20 atmospheres, requiring thick cargo tanks capable of withstanding high pressure. This limited transport capacity. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries advanced its temperature and pressure control technology to solve the challenge of preventing dry ice formation.
Demand for LCO2 carriers continues to grow as the carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) market expands. Having built and delivered a carrier with significantly increased transport capacity, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries expects to gain an early lead in this market. This was the backdrop to Kisun Chung’s remarks at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos earlier this year that taking the lead in eco-friendly and decarbonization technologies is crucial to the future of the shipbuilding and offshore industries.
An HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official said, "This award recognizes our proprietary technological capabilities, which made the world’s largest LCO2 carrier possible," adding, "We will lead the global carbon-neutral market by proactively developing differentiated eco-friendly ship technologies."
