[Financial News] The story of a Samsung Electronics Service engineer who saved a customer's life after appearing on SBS variety show 'Whenever Possible' is drawing renewed attention.
According to Samsung Electronics Service on the 2nd, Oh Seung-joo, who works at the Pyeongchon Center, appeared on 'Whenever Possible,' which aired the previous day. He introduced ways to care for smartphones and precautions to take when using them in different seasons.
On the show, Oh explained, "It is a good idea to turn your smartphone off and on regularly to optimize its memory." He also advised viewers to watch out for water damage from swimming and other water activities in summer, as well as drops and breakage that can occur when using a smartphone while wearing gloves in winter.
At the Pyeongchon Center where Oh works, a female customer in her 40s suddenly experienced breathing difficulties and lost consciousness on October 31 last year after receiving a smartphone inspection and preparing to leave.
At the time, Han Jeong-hyun noticed that the customer looked unwell and was checking her condition when she stopped breathing. Center employees immediately began providing emergency assistance. Center Director Lee Young-il performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about one minute, while Repair Team Leader Kim Yo-han prepared an automated external defibrillator (AED). Han called 119.
Oh, who also appeared on the recent broadcast, helped with the rescue by controlling the scene so that nearby customers would not crowd around. After the employees' initial response, the customer regained spontaneous breathing before paramedics arrived. After recovering her health, she later posted a message of thanks on the Samsung Electronics Service website.
Regular first-aid training is cited as a key reason the employees were able to respond so quickly.
Since 2019, Samsung Electronics Service has invited professional instructors every year to provide employees with hands-on training in CPR and AED use. Employees at the Pyeongchon Center had also completed the relevant training shortly before the incident.
Samsung Electronics Service employees have rescued customers at service sites eight times over the past three years. In August, Lee Young-ho, who visited a customer's home in Bucheon to provide on-site washing machine service, found and rescued a female customer in her 70s who had collapsed in the yard amid a heat wave.
There have also been a series of cases in which employees provided emergency assistance, including CPR and emergency calls, after customers visiting service centers experienced breathing difficulties or employees encountered accident scenes while traveling for on-site service. The cases are considered significant because they show how safety training at service sites, where employees meet customers face to face for product repairs, has led to actual lifesaving efforts.
