Indonesia’s July Foreign Tourist Arrivals Hit 1.53 Million, Highest in Seven Years

【JAKARTA, Indonesia—Correspondent Aulia Maulida Hamdani】The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia reached 1.53 million in July, the highest level in seven years. Malaysia and Australia were among the countries with the most visitors.  
According to local media on the 2nd, BPS-Statistics Indonesia said that the number of foreign tourist arrivals in July stood at 1.53 million, up 9.99% from the previous month and 2.95% from the same month a year earlier. The monthly total of 1.53 million arrivals was the highest in approximately seven years, since August 2019.
June through September is considered Indonesia’s peak tourist season, coinciding with summer holidays in Europe and the United States. July and August are particularly regarded as the main peak period for foreign tourist arrivals. From January through July this year, cumulative foreign tourist arrivals reached 8.98 million, up 5.23% from the same period last year.
Ateng Hartono, deputy director in charge of distribution and services statistics at BPS-Statistics Indonesia, said at a press conference in Jakarta on the 1st, "Foreign tourist arrivals from January through July this year were at their highest level since 2020."
By nationality, tourists from Malaysia accounted for the largest share at 15% of the total, or approximately 228,710 visitors. Australia followed with 12.34%, or about 188,250 visitors, and China with 10.28%, or approximately 156,570 visitors. Arrivals from China surged 33.4% from June, while arrivals from Australia also rose 12.39% month on month.
Among the main entry points, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport recorded the largest number of arrivals. Australian passport holders accounted for a particularly large share of foreign tourists using the airport, allowing Australia to maintain its position as one of the key source countries in Indonesia’s tourism market.
