[Financial News] Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province are joining hands to establish a 'Quantum Cluster' that promotes the convergence of regionally specialized industries and quantum technology.
Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province announced on the 2nd that the 'Southeast Region Quantum Sensing Cluster' had been finally selected in the national quantum cluster competition organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The Southeast Region Quantum Sensing Cluster is a super-regional cooperation project jointly promoted by Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province for four years starting next year.
The key is to foster quantum sensing as a core specialized field and strengthen technological competitiveness by linking quantum materials, components, and equipment with quantum algorithms.
Pusan National University (PNU) and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) will be established as two technology hubs responsible for research and development and technical support, while four demand hubs in the fields of shipbuilding and marine, ports and logistics, aerospace and defense, and mobility and energy will be operated in connection with industrial demand throughout Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province.
South Gyeongsang Province will actively participate in identifying industrial demand for and demonstrating quantum sensing technology based on the region's strong industries, including aerospace and defense, shipbuilding and marine, and machinery and mobility. The goal is to support the application of technologies developed at the technology hubs to industrial sites across Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province and lead them to commercialization.
Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province will support the development of quantum materials, components, and equipment technologies and quantum algorithm research and development, while also establishing a quantum convergence talent development system involving local universities, research institutions, and companies.
The project budget will be determined based on the results of the compilation and finalization of the 2027 government budget proposal. Local funds are planned to be shared equally by Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province by matching a certain percentage of the government contribution.
The heads of Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province jointly stated, "We will combine quantum sensing, quantum materials, components, and equipment, and quantum algorithm technologies with the region's solid industrial base and research capabilities to enhance the competitiveness of key regional industries and develop the Southeast Region of Korea into a global quantum hub representing South Korea."
