[Financial News] KT is developing a safety solution for school buses that manages the entire process—from children boarding and traveling to disembarking—using precision positioning technology and vehicle data. The company plans to prevent accidents such as children being left unattended inside vehicles and eventually expand the solution to academy and welfare transportation vehicles.
KT announced on the 2nd that it had signed an MOU with Hyundai Motor Company, special-purpose mobility company MTR, and smart notification platform company Kids Note to develop a dedicated safe boarding and disembarking solution for children’s school buses.
The agreement was established to prevent safety accidents caused by children remaining unattended in school transportation vehicles and to digitize the operation and management of children’s school buses.
KT will connect school transportation vehicles with safety services by using a precision positioning service based on Trimble RTX, developed in cooperation with its telecommunications and cloud platforms and Trimble. Trimble RTX uses satellite signal correction technology to provide highly precise, lane-level location information. KT plans to expand its application to industries requiring high-precision location data, including port and yard operations and autonomous driving.
Hyundai Motor Company will provide vehicle data, while MTR will handle the application of in-vehicle safety devices, including vehicle development, self-certification, production, and sales. Kids Note will provide a parent-facing application and notification services.
The four companies plan to jointly develop a safe boarding and disembarking solution for children by linking vehicle data with school transportation operations and establish a new safety model for school buses.
Going forward, the companies will enhance safety features by incorporating technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), ultra-wideband (UWB), and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Their goal is to develop the service into a “moving child-care platform” that manages the entire process from boarding and travel to disembarking, including detecting emergencies based on children’s boarding, disembarking, and movement data. The range of vehicle types will also be expanded to include academy vehicles, welfare transportation vehicles, and mobility-support vehicles for people with transportation difficulties.
Noh Hyeong-rae, executive vice president and head of the Corporate Business Headquarters in KT’s Enterprise Division, said, “We will successfully implement the children’s school bus service based on our telecommunications and AX capabilities and outstanding precision positioning technology using Trimble RTX. We will also expand the use of precision positioning across various mobility and industrial sectors.”
