Up to 60 mm of showers in Chungcheong and southern regions on July 2; sweltering heat in the south [FN Weather]

On Wednesday, July 2, heavy showers of 20–30 mm per hour are expected mainly in the Chungcheong region and southern areas, with hail possible in some places. In Seoul and the greater capital area, where rain fell the previous day, most of the heavy rain will subside, although some areas may see light raindrops through the morning. Sweltering conditions will continue in the southern regions and on Jeju Island, where the perceived temperature is expected to rise to around 33°C.
According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, showers are expected in inland areas of the Chungcheong region, the southern regions, and parts of Jeju Island from 9 a.m. to noon through 6–9 p.m. Expected rainfall is 5–60 mm in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province; 5–50 mm in Busan, Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island; and 5–40 mm in Daejeon, Sejong City, southeastern South Chungcheong Province, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gwangju and South Jeolla Province. Showers are also forecast in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province from the morning through the afternoon.
Areas receiving showers could see intense rainfall of 20–30 mm per hour. Gusty winds, thunder, and lightning are expected, and some areas may also experience hail. Because showers can develop intensely over narrow areas, rainfall totals may vary significantly even within the same city, county, or district.
Separately from the showers, rain will continue in parts of the Chungcheong region through the morning. Rainfall of 5–20 mm is expected in Daejeon, Sejong City, and South Chungcheong Province, while 5–10 mm is forecast for central and northern Chungcheongbuk-do and inland areas of southern Gangwon State. Some areas of southern Gyeonggi Province, Seoul, Incheon Metropolitan City, and inland and mountainous parts of Gangwon State may see less than 0.1 mm of raindrops through the morning. Daytime highs in the greater capital area are forecast at 27–30°C.
The heat in the southern regions will continue even after the rain eases. Heat wave advisories are in effect in parts of South Jeolla Province, Jeollabuk-do, North and South Gyeongsang provinces, Jeju Island, and the cities of Gwangju, Daegu, Busan, and Ulsan. The Korean Meteorological Administration expects perceived temperatures to rise to around 33°C through July 3, particularly in the southern regions and on Jeju Island.
Daytime highs nationwide on July 2 will range from 25°C to 32°C.
Tropical nights are also expected to continue, particularly in the southern regions. Tropical night advisories are in effect in South Jeolla Province, parts of North and South Gyeongsang provinces, Jeju Island, and the cities of Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan. A tropical night refers to a phenomenon in which the minimum temperature remains at or above 25°C between 6:01 p.m. and 9 a.m. the following day.
On July 3, rain is expected mainly on Jeju Island, along the Gangwon State east coast and in its mountainous areas, and along the North Gyeongsang Province east coast and northeastern mountains. In the afternoon, showers are forecast to return to southern Chungcheongbuk-do, eastern South Jeolla Province and Jeollabuk-do, inland areas of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, and inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province. Jeju Island may see strong winds with instantaneous speeds of at least 55 km/h from the night of July 3, and most of the country may experience such winds on July 4.
