[Financial News] Ko Pyeong-ki, the chief of the Jeju Provincial Police Agency, who had previously been named as a candidate for promotion to Chief Superintendent General, will not be appointed to that rank in the final round of promotions and transfers. Instead, he will move to the National Police Agency's Public Safety and Traffic Bureau, a post at the Assistant Commissioner level.
The National Police Agency carried out its personnel reshuffle for Chief Superintendent General and Assistant Commissioner posts in the second half of 2026 on the 1st. Ko had been named last month, along with Kim Jongcheol, chief of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, Ko Beom-seok, chief of the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, and Yoo Seung-ryeol, director of investigation planning and coordination at the National Office of Investigation, as a candidate for promotion to Chief Superintendent General.
In this reshuffle, Kim was promoted and appointed as deputy commissioner of the National Police Agency, Ko was appointed chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and Yoo was promoted and appointed chief of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency. Some observers say the recent controversy over the Jeju missing-person case, including allegations of a false closure and a poor response, may have affected Ko's failure to receive the Chief Superintendent General appointment.
