Daegu Metropolitan City Secures Record 9.7855 Trillion Won in Government Budget Proposal

[Financial News, Daegu = Reporter Kim Jang-wook] Daegu Metropolitan City has achieved a major breakthrough by securing the largest amount of state funding in its history in the government budget proposal.
The result is seen as the outcome of Mayor Choo Kyung-ho's hands-on approach in the field.
According to Daegu Metropolitan City, the 2027 government budget proposal includes a record 9.7855 trillion won in national funding, on a tentative basis. That is 721.1 billion won, or 8.0 percent, more than the 9.0644 trillion won secured for 2026.
In particular, as many core projects that will drive Daegu's future development were included in the government budget proposal, the city is expected to gain momentum in its push for additional funding during the National Assembly review stage.
Mayor Choo said at the meeting, "Although many of Daegu's key projects were reflected in the government proposal, securing national funding does not end here." He added, "We will review each project that was not included in the proposal, work as one team with local lawmakers, and actively persuade the relevant standing committees and the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts (SCBA) so that we can secure as much additional funding as possible at the National Assembly stage."
Behind this achievement was Choo's month-long campaign of visiting government offices and the National Assembly after taking office. From the outset, he held budget policy meetings with local lawmakers, met with vice ministers from central ministries, visited the vice minister and the Budget Office and Fiscal Performance Bureau at the Ministry of Planning and Budget, held talks with the minister of the Ministry of Planning and Budget, and met with standing committee chairs at the National Assembly. He also directly met working-level officials, not just lawmakers and ministers, to repeatedly explain Daegu's pending issues and the need for national funding projects.
Looking at the major projects reflected in the government budget proposal, the regional hub AX innovation technology development project received 64.2 billion won, the national robot test field project 13.4 billion won, and the future mobility AI software verification system project 4 billion won. These allocations will help expand Daegu's future high-tech industrial ecosystem centered on AI, robotics, future mobility and bio industries, while strengthening support across the full cycle from technology development to talent training and corporate assistance.
Other included projects were the diversification of upstream Nakdong River water intake sources at 2.4 billion won, the Geumho River environmental restoration project at 22 billion won, the construction of public rental housing in Block A4 of Daegu Grand Park at 15 billion won, and improvements to accessibility facilities at Daegu International Shooting Range at 6.3 billion won. These projects are expected to help build a safer and more comfortable urban environment by reinforcing infrastructure in clean water, environment, housing and safety, while improving daily living conditions that residents can directly feel.
The construction of the Daegu industrial railway line received 15 billion won, the construction of Metro Line 4 received 45.1 billion won, the Sanghwa-ro grade separation project in Dalseo District received 36.8 billion won, and the access road to the Geumho Waterpolis industrial complex received 2.7 billion won. These allocations will help expand the metropolitan transportation network that closely connects the city center and industrial complexes, improving transportation convenience for residents and strengthening industrial competitiveness.
Meanwhile, only the civil airport construction budget for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport was reflected, leaving some disappointment. As a result, the city plans to respond actively during the National Assembly review process to secure national funding for the relocation of the military airport.
