Busan's Yeongdo district, home to many aging houses, pushes slate zero zone project

[Financial News] A large-scale renovation project for asbestos slate roofs is being launched in Yeongdo District, Busan, an area with a relatively high number of aging homes.
The Busan Environment Corporation, Yeongdo District, and Busan Bank said on the 1st that they signed a business agreement with POSCO Steeleon on July 31 to promote the "Our Neighborhood Slate Zero Zone" project.
The agreement was designed to remove and renovate roofs in slate-dense neighborhoods in Yeongdo all at once, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure and improving housing safety for vulnerable residents.
Under the deal, Yeongdo District will handle administrative work, including selecting eligible recipients, while the corporation will oversee construction management, such as ordering the work and supervising sites. Busan Bank donated funds to help cover residents' out-of-pocket costs, and POSCO Steeleon will provide specialized color-coated steel materials, along with direct installation and after-sales support for the households involved.
With support from financial institutions, the project will ease the economic burden on vulnerable residents. Using POSCO Steeleon's steel materials and direct installation, the asbestos slate roofs will be fully renovated. The corporation plans to boost the effectiveness of the roof improvement project by processing slate on a village-by-village basis.
Corporation Chairman Lee Geun-hee said, "This agreement is intended to provide practical help to marginalized groups by covering the residents' share of slate removal costs through private sponsorship," adding, "I hope it becomes an opportunity for the private and public sectors to work together to protect public health and environmental safety."
