[Financial News] Broadcaster Julien Kang shared his views on relationships between men and women after hearing a Turkish man talk about cultural differences in dating Korean women.
A Turkish college student named Alp recently appeared on the YouTube channel “Julien Kang’s Engang Brother.” He spoke with Julien Kang about Korea’s dating culture and relationships between men and women.
During the conversation, Julien Kang asked Alp, “Have you ever dated a Korean woman?” Alp replied, “Of course I have,” and added, “There are many differences compared with Turkish women.”
When asked to explain the differences, Alp answered cautiously. He said, “Korean women expect a lot. You have to treat them like a princess.” As Alp hesitated, saying he might offend someone, Julien Kang responded, “It’s fine. I’ll edit it out if it gets too much.”
One of the biggest differences Alp mentioned was dating expenses. He said, “There was a woman I dated before, and she always expected me to pay for dinner,” adding, “I can pay because I’m her boyfriend, but in other countries, especially in Europe, the man pays on the first date, and then it’s like, ‘I’ll buy dinner, so you buy coffee.’”
Alp, who is a college student, said the cost of dating sometimes became a burden. When Julien Kang asked, “What do you do then?” Alp replied, “I go to the bathroom.”
Julien Kang laughed and asked, “You use the bathroom trick?” He then advised, “In that case, don’t pay. Just wait.”
Alp said, “I don’t want to be rude. So I always paid. That was fine,” but added, “Sometimes it feels a little burdensome.”
Born in Canada, Julien Kang is part of an international couple and is married to fitness YouTuber JJ. The discussion, which began with differences between Korean and European dating cultures, went on to broader views on gender relations.
Julien Kang said, “There is no such thing as one side being superior. We are simply different.”
He added, “There are things women do better than us, and there are things we do better. That does not mean one side is more important. The moment you say one side is superior, you are putting the other down, and that is not true. I think both are equally important.”
He also said, “Abilities can differ. There are things men are naturally good at, and there are things women do better than men,” adding, “Koreans are a bit different from Western culture. That applies not only to dating, but generally as well.”
Meanwhile, Julien Kang has worked in Korea as a model, actor, and broadcaster. He married JJ in May 2024.
