Online shopping transactions in July reach 25.0954 trillion won, second-highest on record

[Financial News] Online shopping transactions in July topped 25 trillion won, marking the second-highest level on record. The increase was largely driven by sharp gains in transactions for telecommunications devices and automobiles and auto parts, following a similar trend in June.
According to the "Online Shopping Trends for July 2026" released by the Ministry of Data and Statistics on the 1st, online shopping transactions in July came to 25.0954 trillion won, up 7.3% from a year earlier. In terms of transaction value, it was the second-largest figure on record after March this year, when the total reached 25.5434 trillion won, following the revision of the time series in 2017.
By product category, transactions for telecommunications devices reached 741.4 billion won, surging 37.5% from a year earlier. Transactions for automobiles and auto parts also totaled 960 billion won, up 31.1% over the same period. The strong growth continued from June.
A ministry official explained, "In the case of automobiles, purchases of imported electric vehicles continued to rise, and this month we also saw improvement on used-car platforms." The official added, "Telecommunications devices were affected by Samsung Electronics' Onnuri Gift Certificate refund event, which ran through the 5th," and noted that "demand for used phones increased ahead of new product launches in August."
Cosmetics, computers and peripheral devices, and agricultural, livestock and fishery products also saw sharp increases in transaction value, rising 14.0%, 12.9%, and 12.6%, respectively. In contrast, clothing and sports and leisure goods fell 6.1% and 6.0% from a year earlier.
Looking at the share by category, food service transactions reached 3.8945 trillion won, accounting for 15.5% of the total. Food and beverages followed at 3.5008 trillion won, or 13.9%, while travel and transportation services came next at 3.1695 trillion won, or 12.6%.
Mobile shopping transactions totaled 19.5716 trillion won, up 6.4% from a year earlier. Mobile shopping accounted for 78.0% of total online shopping transactions, down 0.6 percentage point from the same month last year.
By product category, mobile shopping accounted for 99.1% of food service transactions, the highest share. E-coupon services followed at 92.4%, and children's and infant products at 85.3%.
By type of online shopping platform, general malls recorded 13.5428 trillion won in transactions, up 6.8% from a year earlier. Specialized malls posted 11.5527 trillion won, an increase of 7.9%.
