[Financial News] Coupang Eats said that sales at stores participating in its August traditional market promotion at Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market rose 87% during the campaign period compared with the same period a month earlier. Some stores saw weekly sales jump by as much as 220% from the previous week. The initiative was credited with helping traditional market merchants expand their online sales channels, boost revenue and revitalize the market.
According to the industry on the 1st, the event was designed to promote the specialty foods of traditional market merchants, who support the local economy, and to stimulate consumption. It ran for one month from July 16 to Aug. 17, introducing signature market foods to tourists and local customers during the summer vacation season and helping merchants expand their online sales channels.
Coupang Eats offered discount coupons to participating stores and ran a range of promotions highlighting popular restaurants in the market. For selected stores, it supported digital transformation and the expansion of online sales channels by producing promotional videos and taking menu photos. Coupang Eats Services Ltd. also provided 200,000 eco-friendly bags free of charge in June to help ease packaging costs for merchants at Sokcho Market.
A weekly feature called "Recommended Stores of the Week," which introduced new stores each week, also contributed to sales growth for participating merchants.
Coupang Eats and Coupang Eats Services Ltd. have continued to provide win-win support to help revitalize traditional markets. In the first half of this year, they carried out free support for eco-friendly packaging materials at Cheongnyangni Market, one-on-one online sales strategy consulting, meal-kit production and an industry-academia cooperation project with KHU. Sales on Coupang Eats by Cheongnyangni Market merchants rose about 40% year on year in the first half.
They also worked with the National Merchants Federation on a traditional market solidarity project. The program provided 1.2 million eco-friendly bags and about 300,000 eco-friendly containers free of charge to traditional market merchants nationwide. Since October 2021, Coupang Eats has been supporting a promotion that waives intermediary fees for packaging services for traditional market stores.
A Coupang Eats official said, "Following Cheongnyangni, we were able to confirm through the traditional market promotion in Sokcho that traditional market merchants expanded their online sales channels and increased sales." The official added, "We will continue to provide a range of support to revitalize traditional markets through win-win promotions and digital transformation programs that reflect the unique characteristics of each region and market."
