[Financial News] IMM Investment has brought together major domestic industrial companies such as POSCO, Doosan Group, Hyundai Motor Company, and GS Engineering & Construction to invest in Japan's deep tech sector. The move is drawing attention because it goes beyond individual strategic investments and establishes a cross-border investment platform linking Korean industrial capital with Japanese companies that hold core technologies.
According to the investment banking and venture capital industries on the 1st, IMM Investment Japan (IMMJ) participated as the lead investor in the Series D funding round for Kyoto Fusioneering, a Japanese nuclear fusion energy company.
The key to this investment is the Korea-Japan Fusion Fund, a project fund separately created by IMMJ. Major Korean industrial companies, including POSCO Holdings Inc., POSCO International, Doosan Group, Hyundai Motor Company, and GS Engineering & Construction, joined as strategic investors. Financial investors such as Octagon Venture Partners, along with local Japanese banks and other strategic investors, also provided funding.
In the IB sector, attention is focused not only on the investment target but also on the composition of the fund's investors. The fact that major Korean conglomerates from industries ranging from steel and energy to heavy industry, machinery, automobiles, and construction have come together for a single Japanese deep tech project suggests significant potential for future technology adoption and joint business opportunities.
Kyoto Fusioneering is a Japanese deep tech company that has secured both the core equipment and plant engineering technologies needed to commercialize nuclear fusion power. It is developing key technologies for fusion facilities, including gyrotrons, which are plasma heating devices, as well as fuel cycle systems, blankets, and thermal cycle technologies. The company is also carrying out the 'UNITY' project in Japan, Canada, and the United States to verify its technologies in real plant environments.
The funds raised in the Series D round will be used to build and advance UNITY-1, UNITY-2, and UNITY-3 demonstration infrastructure, as well as to strengthen R&D and manufacturing capabilities for gyrotrons.
The IB industry views this deal as a sign that IMMJ's investment strategy in Japan is entering a new phase of expansion.
In practice, the structure involves identifying companies in Japan and then linking not only IMM's capital but also the business networks of major Korean conglomerates. This means the deal can pursue technology and business cooperation between Korean and Japanese companies at the same time, rather than focusing solely on financial returns.
One IB industry official said, "There are many deep tech companies in Japan with strong technology but in need of industrial partners as they expand globally," adding, "The key point to watch is that combining the capital, manufacturing, and business infrastructure of Korean conglomerates could create cross-border deals that go beyond simple investment."
An IMMJ official said, "It is meaningful that we have connected major Korean strategic investors and world-class Japanese technology companies through a single investment platform," adding, "We will support these efforts so that they lead not only to investment, but also to technology and business cooperation between companies in both countries."
Meanwhile, starting with this deal, IMMJ plans to expand its cross-border strategy by combining local Japanese deal sourcing, IMM Investment's investment capabilities, and Korean industrial capital. It also plans to broaden its investment scope beyond deep tech sectors such as semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and energy to include intellectual property, content, and entertainment.
