Trump Pressures Seoul, Saying It Is "Not Helping"; Cheong Wa Dae Says It Is "Actively Participating in International Efforts"

[Financial News] Cheong Wa Dae said on the 1st that it is reviewing practical and military measures to help ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration, saying South Korea had effectively turned down Washington's request for support on the Iran issue.
A Cheong Wa Dae official said that the government is closely monitoring rising tensions in the Middle East, including around the Strait of Hormuz, and is actively participating in international efforts to restore global maritime logistics as soon as possible.
The official added that the government has been continuously discussing cooperation measures with the international community, including the United States. The government is also reviewing possible practical and military contributions to freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, taking into account the security posture on the Korean Peninsula and domestic legal procedures.
Earlier, in an interview released on the 30th of last month local time, President Trump referred to the size of USFK in South Korea and claimed that he had asked South Korea for help regarding Iran, but that the South Korean government replied, "It would be better not to do it." Trump also said he would "remember" the response and argued that the United States does not need to keep supporting allies that do not help it.
A Cheong Wa Dae official said, "This is something the government has consistently pursued, and it is not a new issue."
