[Financial News] KOMSCO said on the 1st that it has launched a premium money-themed product, "Money, Wind. Fan.", through its online mall. The item recycles byproducts generated during the currency manufacturing process.
The new product is the third result of KOMSCO's eco-friendly upcycling brand, Moneymade. The idea, discovered through moneyLAB, a citizen-participation open innovation platform, was turned into a real product through collaboration between the corporation's currency designers and artisans. It was first introduced in August on the crowdfunding platform Tumblbug and drew an explosive response, reaching 10,974% of its funding goal.
The product features Irworobongdo, the iconic royal painting of the Joseon Dynasty that is also familiar from the design of the 10,000-won bill. A currency designer reinterpreted traditional cultural elements to create the design, while a craft artisan incorporated currency byproducts into the fan ribs and surface. The item also carries a symbolic meaning of warding off bad luck and wishing for wealth, with a double message of hoping that money will flow in and that a money wind will blow.
The goods business using currency byproducts is being positively received not only as simple eco-friendly marketing, but also for helping public enterprises reduce waste disposal costs and build a resource circulation system. Fiber waste generated during banknote production and shredded pieces of damaged currency were difficult to handle because of regulatory and security issues, but converting them into high-value cultural products has been seen as a new model for resource recycling.
The recent trend of "value consumption" among Generation MZ, along with changes in the Business-to-Business (B2B) promotional and souvenir market, has also supported the success of these money-themed goods. Among consumers who value rarity and storytelling, goods featuring KOMSCO's unique security materials and narratives are drawing attention as collectible items, while demand is also rising for VIP partnership gifts from companies and institutions.  "Money, Wind. Fan." has been available on KOMSCO's online mall since the 1st.
"Thanks to the support we received through crowdfunding, we were able to officially launch the fan goods," said Sung Chang-hoon, president of KOMSCO. "We will continue to add new value to currency byproducts and introduce innovative money-themed goods that people can enjoy in everyday life."
