Jeju Content Promotion Institute to Screen 11 Films for Free at Hanrim Small Cinema... O Muel’s New Film and Late Ahn Sung-ki’s Signature Works to Be Featured

[Financial News Jeju = Reporter Jung Yong-bok] Hanrim Small Cinema, operated by the Jeju Content Promotion Institute, will present 11 films free of charge over the course of a month. The lineup brings together films and audience programs that are often hard to find locally, ranging from director O Muel’s new work highlighting Jeju films and creators to the cinematic world of the late actor Ahn Sung-ki.
According to the Jeju Content Promotion Institute on the 1st, Hanrim Small Cinema was selected for the Korean Film Council’s small cinema showcase project for the fifth consecutive year and will hold the “Cheerful Weekend” program from that day through Oct. 1.
The showcase is hosted by the Korean Film Council and organized by the Korea Association for Media and Education. This year’s theme is “Our Neighborhood Cine Spot.”
A total of 11 films will be screened across 10 sessions. Admission and participation fees for related programs are all free, and all screenings require advance reservations.
A separate program has also been prepared to reflect Jeju’s identity. The Jeju-focused section will feature director O Muel’s new film, “Norwegian Mackerel,” along with other works related to Jeju. O Muel is a filmmaker from Jeju who won the Jury Grand Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for “Jiseul,” a film about the Jeju uprising. He will also hold a GV, or audience talk, where he discusses the film and Jeju cinema directly with viewers.
A program revisiting the body of work of the late actor Ahn Sung-ki is also drawing attention. The section titled “My First National Actor, Ahn Sung-ki” will screen “Unbowed” and “Radio Star.” A special cine talk featuring programmer Kim Hyeong-seok will explore Ahn Sung-ki’s major works and the history of Korean cinema.

The lineup also includes domestic and international films about family, growth, and community. Titles in the program include “Sentimental Value,” “The Kid with a Bike,” “The Quiet Family,” “Save the Green Planet!,” “Robot Dreams,” and “A Silent Voice.”
The project also received additional funding from the Jeju Content Promotion Institute. By adding the institute’s budget to the Korean Film Council’s grant, the program has expanded beyond screenings to strengthen related events such as director talks and cine talks.
Hanrim Small Cinema has continued to curate programs so local residents can watch works that are difficult to encounter at mainstream theaters centered on commercial films. With five consecutive years of selection and additional in-house funding, it has also secured a foundation for running ongoing local cultural programs rather than one-off screenings.
Viewers who watch multiple films during the showcase period will receive souvenirs on a first-come, first-served basis. Screening schedules, reservation dates, and details of related programs can be found through Hanrim Small Cinema.
Kang Do-hee, a researcher at the Jeju Content Promotion Institute, said, "Being selected for the showcase for five consecutive years has allowed us to present a wide range of films and cultural programs to local residents," adding, "We will actively use our own funding to expand the project so residents can more easily experience culture and content in their daily lives."
