"Are You That Woman's Grandmother?" Running Crew Leader Refused to Apologize After Elderly Woman Was Knocked Down

A man identified as the crew leader drew criticism after telling a passerby who demanded an apology, "Are you that woman's grandmother?" and "All my desire to apologize just disappeared."
On August 31, a video was shared on social networking services and online communities showing running crew members colliding with pedestrians and the ensuing protest.
According to informant A, a running crew was jogging together when one member bumped into an elderly woman passing by. The woman reportedly fell to the ground in the process.
Passerby B, who saw the incident, approached C, who was identified as the leader of the running crew, and protested. B said, "Why are you running so fast? The grandmother fell, didn't she? If someone gets hurt, shouldn't you check whether they're okay and apologize?"
C did not apologize right away. He pushed back, saying, "All my desire to apologize just disappeared because of you," and, "You should have said it nicely. Why are you raising your voice like this?"
When asked why they were running so fast, C explained, "Our team is preparing for a competition right now." In response, B raised his voice and said, "Are you out of your mind? What does preparing for a competition have to do with anything? That's your own problem. An elderly woman has been hurt, so go apologize right now."
C then shot back, "Are you that woman's grandmother?" In response to demands that he first check on the victim and apologize, he questioned whether the protesting passerby was related to the injured woman.
A, who described the scene, said, "I don't understand why they're making such a big deal out of a running crew. This man is said to be the leader of the group, but even after making a mistake, he acted shamelessly. What did the elderly woman who was just passing by do wrong?"
A added, "His character is truly the worst. He made the mistake and still acted brazenly. That's why running crews get criticized as a nuisance."
Internet users who watched the video also criticized the running crew's attitude. Reactions included, "This is why running gets a bad name," "Good runners get criticized because of people like that," and "Run alone. Don't charge around in groups and inconvenience others."
