[Financial News] Comedian Kim Won-hoon has revealed that he underwent a hair transplant because of hair loss. As he disclosed the amount of hair transplanted on air, interest is also growing in the transplant process and post-procedure care.
Kim appeared on the SBS TV variety show "Running Man," which aired on Aug. 30. As the cast talked about his hair, Yang Se-chan said, "He got a hair transplant. How much is one strand?" When Ji Ye-eun said, "You had 1,000 grafts transplanted," Kim corrected her, saying, "Not 1,000. 4,000."
The broadcast did not explain in detail how Kim received the transplant or what exactly the transplant unit meant. In general, hair transplantation involves removing follicles from areas less affected by hair loss, such as the back or sides of the head, and moving them to areas with thinning hair.

A hair transplant is a way to restore hair to thinning areas, but it does not eliminate every cause of hair loss. In cases such as male pattern baldness, which is influenced by genetics and hormones, the surrounding non-transplanted hair may continue to thin.
The American Academy of Dermatology says that before considering a hair transplant, patients should check the cause and progression of hair loss, as well as the amount of hair available for transplantation. If needed, blood tests or scalp exams may also be used to look for thyroid disease, nutritional problems, hormonal imbalances, or scalp conditions.
If you suddenly lose a lot of hair or develop round bald patches, you should not immediately think about a hair transplant. That is because telogen effluvium, in which hair falls out temporarily a few months after surgery, fever, illness, or severe stress, can also occur. In such cases, different treatments may be needed depending on the cause and progression.

After a hair transplant, the transplanted hair may temporarily fall out. The American Academy of Dermatology says transplanted hairs can shed between two and eight weeks after the procedure, and around three months later, the hair may look thinner than before the treatment. New hair then begins to grow, and it can take about six to nine months to see the results. In some cases, it may take up to a year.
The National Health Service (NHS) also advises that during the first two weeks after a hair transplant, the transplanted follicles may not yet be fully settled, so the scalp should be handled carefully. Patients may be advised to reduce intense exercise for about a month, and scabbing, swelling, and a tight feeling around the treated area are also common.
However, if you experience severe pain, bleeding, signs of infection, or unexpected side effects, you should contact the medical institution that performed the procedure. Because hair transplantation is a medical procedure that involves cutting the skin or extracting follicles, the choice of clinic and aftercare can affect the outcome.

Even after a hair transplant, existing hair loss may continue, so medical staff may recommend hair-loss medication as well. Mayo Clinic explains that hair transplantation moves hair to areas affected by hereditary hair loss, but hair loss can still progress after surgery.
Hair-loss medications are chosen based on sex, the cause of hair loss, current medications, and underlying conditions. Rather than taking products sold online or unverified supplements on your own, it is safer to get a dermatologist’s diagnosis of the type of hair loss and the condition of the scalp.
