[Financial News] Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC)'s variety show 'I Live Alone' is losing credibility after reversing its position on allegations that the episode featuring broadcaster Jun Hyun-moo's impromptu trip to Kazakhstan was staged.
The production team of 'I Live Alone' said on its official website on the 31st that it did not receive any financial sponsorship or production funding from the Almaty Tourism Bureau for the Kazakhstan episode. It also added that the shoot went smoothly because it received the administrative procedures needed for local filming and filming cooperation for on-site production.
That stands in contrast to its first explanation on the 25th, when it said it had not received any filming support or sponsorship.
After the Department of Tourism of Almaty city announced through the government's official website that the filming had been carried out with support from the Almaty city tourism office, the 'I Live Alone' team effectively narrowed its explanation from 'support' to 'cooperation' and belatedly accepted the claim.
The controversy began with Jun Hyun-moo's impromptu trip to Almaty, which aired on the 14th.
At the time, Jun Hyun-moo headed to the airport without choosing a destination. He then looked at the departure board, booked a flight to Almaty, Kazakhstan, on the spot, and set off.
However, questions arose that the trip had been planned in advance after it was revealed that dozens of staff members accompanied him, a local rental car was arranged on the same day without notarization procedures, and flight tickets had apparently been secured beforehand. Some even claimed that the production team and Jun Hyun-moo had decided on Almaty and prepared the tickets a week earlier.
As the controversy grew, the production team finally acknowledged that it had received administrative and filming support from the local government, prompting criticism that the show's premise of an 'impromptu trip' had also lost its meaning. The team's poor initial response and delayed explanation are further fueling viewers' doubts about the program.
