[Financial News] OpenAI Game Builders Seoul opened on the 31st at Graphic by Daishin in Seoul. Key figures from Korea's gaming industry gathered to share their experiences in game development using artificial intelligence (AI) and discuss the future of the industry in an AI-driven era.
The event began with a welcome speech by Oliver Jay, OpenAI's international director, followed by opening keynote presentations from Song Jae-kyung, former CEO of XL Games, and Song Byung Joon, chairman of Com2uS.
In his welcome remarks, Jay said, "This event is a meaningful gathering of the people who built the history of Korean gaming and the developers who will redefine the future in the AI era." He added, "I hope Korean developers will actively use AI and boldly take on new forms of gameplay."
Song, the former CEO, shared his experience developing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) with OpenAI Codex and highlighted a development boost that increased coding throughput by more than eight times compared with previous levels.
Song also presented a next-generation gaming ecosystem model in which humans and AI coexist under the same rules. He emphasized, "AI should not be seen merely as a tool for making software faster. It should be designed as a 'new participant' in the game that can see, judge, and act on its own."
Chairman Song recounted the pioneering history of mobile gaming, which began 25 years ago in the era of black-and-white feature phones with 24-kilobyte (KB) memory. "Then and now, the essence of games is to deliver fun to users within the limits of available technology," he said.
He continued, "As OpenAI opened the AI era, game creation has been democratized, allowing anyone with an idea to make a game." He added, "Now, the process of launching and servicing games in the global market will also become much faster and easier."
The event also introduced Hive Axil, a game backend platform built on Com2uS's 25 years of service expertise and newly adapted for the AI era. Legendary Korean game developers joined as mentors and shared hands-on experience with AI code generation tools as well as their development know-how.
In the afternoon session, 40 preselected teams took part in a "3-minute speech" segment, where they presented AI-based game architectures and features. At the same time, a "5-hour live hackathon" was held, during which teams built games in real time around themes that were revealed on site.
