Jeonbuk State Applies for Jeonju Urban Convergence Special Zone

【Financial News Jeonju=Reporter Kang In】 A move has begun to turn Jeonju in Jeonbuk into an economic hub with self-reliant capabilities.
According to the Jeonbuk State Government on the 31st, it recently submitted an application to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for designation of the 'Jeonju Urban Convergence Special Zone' and has begun a full-scale response.
Urban Convergence Special Zones are growth hubs created in regional areas to counter the one-pole system centered on the Seoul metropolitan area. The goal is to establish special zones in major metropolitan areas so that each region can stand on its own as an independent economic hub.
Previously, MOLIT designated special zones in the five major metropolitan cities and later expanded the scope to local cities with populations of at least 500,000.
Jeonbuk State Government and Jeonju-si plan to devote all-out efforts to securing a final candidate site in response to MOLIT's evaluation, which will run from September to October.
The Jeonju Urban Convergence Special Zone is envisioned as a complex hub where industry, housing, and culture come together in the area surrounding the station district. It plans to include an Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, an AI data center, a Physical AI Innovation Campus, and a Robot Demonstration Sharing Center.
A Jeonbuk State Government official said, "As competition is expected among six major cities, including Jeonju, we will do our best to prepare a thorough evaluation and be selected as the final candidate site."
