On the 31st, KOMSCO said it planned the limited sale to commemorate the successful hosting of the 48th session, held 38 years after South Korea joined the UNESCO World Heritage Convention as a member state, and to meet demand from collectors. The coins drew strong interest from domestic and overseas collectors during on-site sales at the Busan session in July, and sales will end as soon as the remaining stock is sold out.
The commemorative coins consist of a silver coin, a cupronickel coin, and a two-coin set. The 99.9% pure silver coin, with a face value of 70,000 won, vividly captures the diversity of the ecosystem of Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats, which was expanded in two stages to include Yeosu, Goheung County, Muan County, and Seosan. The cupronickel coin, made of a copper-nickel alloy and carrying a face value of 30,000 won, was designed around the Bangucheon Petroglyphs, South Korea's 17th World Heritage site, adding scholarly and cultural value.
Purchases will be available from 10 a.m. on Sept. 1 through KOMSCO's official online store on a first-come, first-served basis. Including the June pre-order allocation, each buyer may purchase up to 10 single coins of each type and up to 10 two-coin sets. Sung Chang-hoon, president of KOMSCO, said, "We hope many people will take interest in these coins, which capture the excellence of our cultural heritage and its international standing."
Meanwhile, commemorative coins marking World Heritage listings have recently drawn attention as more than simple collectibles. They are increasingly seen as a way to showcase Korea's distinctive minting technology and cultural content in the global currency market. By combining precise micro-engraving techniques with three-dimensional expression, KOMSCO faithfully reproduces the beauty of Korea's natural and cultural heritage on the coin surface, earning praise in overseas special coin markets as well.
