68.5 mm of Rain Falls in One Hour on Nagwoldo Island in Yeonggwang; Heavy Rain of More Than 50 mm per Hour Expected in Central Regions [FN Weather]

Heavy rain of 68.5 mm fell over one hour on Nagwoldo Island in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, on the morning of the 31st. As of 8 a.m. that day, cumulative rainfall on the island had reached 539.0 mm. With heavy rain advisories in effect for the Chungcheong region and western Jeolla, additional damage is possible as more than 50 mm of rain per hour may fall in central regions and the Jeolla area.
According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, very heavy rain of around 30 mm per hour was falling mainly in western Jeolla as of 8 a.m. In parts of the northern west coast of Jeollanam-do, rainfall exceeded 50 mm per hour.
The heaviest rainfall over the previous hour, as of 8 a.m., was recorded on Nagwoldo Island at 68.5 mm. It was followed by 35.0 mm in Taein, Jeongeup, 33.0 mm in Imjado, Sinan County, and 29.5 mm in Sangha, Gochang. Ulleung Cheonbu recorded 24.0 mm, while Jukjeong in Goseong, Gangwon, saw 13.5 mm.
Heavy rain warnings are also expanding, mainly across western Jeolla. A warning was issued for Nagwol-myeon in Yeonggwang at 3:05 a.m. and for Wido-myeon in Buan at 3:15 a.m. Later, warnings were issued for Gochang County at 5:30 a.m., the areas of Buan County excluding Wido-myeon at 6 a.m., the areas of Sinan County excluding Heuksan-myeon at 6:40 a.m., and the areas of Yeonggwang County excluding Nagwol-myeon at 7:20 a.m.
At 8:20 a.m., a heavy rain warning was also issued for Jeongeup in North Jeolla. At the same time, a heavy rain advisory was issued for Jeonju.
Cumulative rainfall has also risen sharply due to rain that has continued since the previous day. From midnight on the 30th to 8 a.m. on the 31st, Nagwoldo Island received 539.0 mm of rain. Other totals included 177.0 mm in Boseong County, Jeollanam-do, 176.0 mm in Sangha, Gochang, 172.7 mm in Buan, and 162.0 mm in Imjado, Sinan County.
In the Chungcheong region, the highest cumulative rainfall was 115.0 mm in Yeonmu, Nonsan. It was followed by 92.0 mm in Yanghwa, Buyeo, 84.6 mm in Geumsan County, 81.5 mm in Seocheon County, and 66.0 mm in Jeongnim, Daejeon.
In the Gyeongsang region, rainfall reached 121.5 mm in Ulgi, Ulsan, 111.0 mm in Buksang, Geochang, 87.5 mm in Euncheok-myeon, Sangju, and 70.5 mm in Songbaek, Miryang. In Gangwon, the totals were 54.5 mm in Munmak, Wonju, 44.5 mm in Jangseong-dong, Taebaek, 39.5 mm in Girin-myeon, Inje-gun, and 37.0 mm at Sapdangnyeong Pass, Gangneung.
In the Seoul metropolitan area, rainfall measured 40.0 mm in Jeomdong, Yeoju, 31.0 mm in Cheongpyeong, Gapyeong, 30.5 mm in Namchon, Osan, and 30.0 mm in Namyangju. In Jeju, 42.0 mm was recorded at the southern wall of Hallasan in Seogwipo, and 36.0 mm at Seongpanak Trail.
The Korean Meteorological Administration forecast strong rain accompanied by gusts, thunder and lightning in many parts of the country on the 31st.
It urged the public to take extra care to prevent safety accidents such as landslides and flooding in low-lying areas.
