The Rise of Geochang, the City of Education: Geochang International School Presents a Growth Model

[Financial News] Geochang International School, a lifelong education facility registered with the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education and located in Gajo-myeon, Geochang County, South Gyeongsang Province, has emerged as a key educational hub in Geochang, the city of education, by producing a large number of professionals active in the medical field at home and abroad.
According to the school’s report on graduates’ career paths, 97 alumni hold Korean medical licenses. Another 24 hold overseas medical licenses, including 10 in the United States, 10 in Germany, three in the United Kingdom and one in Austria. The school also produced one professor of neurosurgery at Korea University (KU) and one medical missionary, while 30 graduates passed Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE, the globally recognized U.S. medical licensing exam. The school said it disclosed the results by field rather than simply adding them up, noting that some qualifications may overlap.
Geochang International School also stands out for its founding structure. In general, the name “international school” is approved only within Free Economic Zones under the Special Act on Free Economic Zones, but Geochang County is not part of one. As a result, the school was officially registered in January 2008 under Article 31 of the Lifelong Education Act as a formal school-type lifelong education facility under the jurisdiction of the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education. It has built a unique model as the only international school in the country established and operated on the basis of the Lifelong Education Act, going beyond legal limits.
Its curriculum is also closely aligned with global standards. Classes are kept small, with about 25 students per class and a total capacity of 125 students across five classes, allowing for level-based instruction. In 2013, the school received certification from the University of Cambridge as a Cambridge International School. Based on that, it now runs the Cambridge International AS & A Level curriculum, which is comparable to the IB program adopted by many public schools in Korea. In particular, its English-based foundational medical program, developed in partnership with the prestigious University of Debrecen in Hungary, has become a practical and powerful pathway for students aiming to enter medical and health-related fields overseas. The school has also continued to expand academic exchanges and joint education programs with leading universities abroad.
School founder Principal Ham Seung-hoon cited “diversity” and “open-mindedness” as the key strengths of local education in the era of AI. He said, "Geochang has excellent mainstream elite high schools such as Geochang High School and Geochang Daeseong High School, but in the rapidly changing AI era, the competitiveness of mainstream schools alone may have limits." He added, "To preserve the brand value of Geochang as a city of education, an open educational paradigm that breaks existing frameworks and diversity must coexist."
The local education community and the county government are also paying close attention to Geochang International School’s progress. As the school’s independent educational model is helping local talent advance onto the global stage, stronger and more systematic support from the local government is expected to become a key driver in Geochang County’s rise as a true global education city.
