Investigation into KORAIL Employee Death at Uiwang Station Intensifies as CCTV and Radio Records Secured

[Financial News] Authorities have secured CCTV footage and radio records and launched a full investigation into the death of a Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) employee who was crushed by a train while carrying out shunting work at Uiwang Station in Gyeonggi Province.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Railway Police Unit and the Anyang branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 30th, the two agencies are analyzing CCTV footage from the site of the accident the previous day, along with radio communications between workers.
The accident occurred at around 7:20 a.m. on the 29th inside Uiwang Station on the Gyeongbu Line. A KORAIL employee in his 50s, identified as A, was crushed by a train and died while performing shunting work.
A worked as a shunter, helping the engineer connect, disconnect, and move freight cars while communicating near the tracks. At the time, he was reportedly positioned at one end of a 260-meter train made up of one locomotive and 12 freight cars, along with one co-worker.
The accident is believed to have occurred while the two workers were moving the train to a siding track used to transfer arriving trains to a departure track.
Based on the CCTV footage, the railway police and the labor ministry are checking the situation before and after the accident. They are also focusing on whether radio contact actually took place between the shunter, the engineer, and other workers. The railway police said they could not disclose specific details of the investigation, including whether charges will be filed.
After the accident, a work suspension order was issued for the shunting area at Uiwang Station. KORAIL is reviewing alternative arrangements for logistics operations previously handled there, and it expects no disruption to passenger train services.
The Korean Railway Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union plans to issue a statement soon calling for a formal three-person crew system for shunting work.
