Odyssey Leaves Spider-Man Behind, 10 Million Admissions Also Within Reach

Emma Thomas's film Odyssey has overtaken Spider-Man: Brand New Day to become the highest-grossing foreign release among films released this year.
According to distributor Universal Pictures on the 30th, Odyssey had drawn a cumulative 8.471 million viewers as of 7 a.m. that day, surpassing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which had 8.454 million.
Odyssey opened on the 5th, a week later than Spider-Man, but it moved faster at the box office. It passed 8 million admissions on the 28th, its 24th day in theaters, two days earlier than Spider-Man, which reached that mark on its 26th day.
Its box-office momentum has shown little sign of slowing. From the 3rd, two days before its release, through the 30th, it held the No. 1 spot in overall advance ticket sales for 28 straight days. Since opening, it has also topped the box office for 25 consecutive days.
Word of mouth and online buzz among moviegoers are also supporting its long run. Short-form videos and memes using the film's characters and memorable scenes are spreading, while more viewers are searching for the mythological background and hidden details in the work.
If Odyssey surpasses 10 million admissions, it will become the second 10-million-admission film released this year and the first foreign film to do so. At the current pace, analysts say that crossing the 10-million mark is now within reach.
