[Financial News] More than 500 boys and girls in grades 1 through 6 took part in the 5th Ilwoo Cup National Table Tennis Tournament, named after the late Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho's pen name, and competed to showcase their skills.
Hanjin Group said on the 30th that the tournament, organized by the Korea Table Tennis Association and sponsored by Hanjin Group, was held for two days starting on the 29th at Gyeyang Gymnasium in Incheon.
First launched in 2022 as part of a memorial project for the late Chairman Cho Yang-ho, the Ilwoo Cup National Table Tennis Tournament was created to honor his dedication and achievements in developing table tennis, while also helping young players grow and pursue their dreams through the sport.
Cho, who died in 2019, worked to nurture and support players, as well as train referees and coaches, after taking office as president of the Korea Table Tennis Association in July 2008. He also devoted himself to the development of Korean table tennis by helping raise its profile on the international stage. During the tournament, a memorial photo exhibition and memorial video screening were also held in his honor.
In addition to awarding prize money to the coaches of outstanding players and scholarships to players with strong results, the association plans to continue supporting young athletes through overseas training and participation in international competitions.
A Hanjin Group official said, "We will continue working with the Korea Table Tennis Association to carry on the late chairman's spirit and further develop the Ilwoo Cup National Table Tennis Tournament into an event that contributes to the growth of young table tennis players and the development of table tennis in Korea."
