The Whole of Jeju Was a Classroom... Student-Made "Jeju, the Island of Learning" Wins Grand Prize

[Financial News, Jeju = Reporter Jung Yong-bok] A video by middle school students who viewed various parts of Jeju as spaces for learning beyond the classroom won the grand prize at the Jeju education video contest. The event brought together works that recorded education policy through students' eyes, as they picked up cameras themselves and turned their school lives, Jeju's nature, history and culture, and digital education into videos.
According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education on the 30th, the awards ceremony for the "2026 Jeju Education Video Contest" was held on the 28th in the conference room of the provincial office of education.
A total of 96 entries were submitted to the contest, which ran from June 8. After judging, 13 works were selected as winners, including one grand prize, three excellence awards, three merit awards and six encouragement awards.
The grand prize went to "Jeju, the Island of Learning," created by Shin Daniel and Yoon Si-hoo of Shin Eom Middle School.
The work expanded the idea of a learning space beyond the classroom to the entire island of Jeju. By linking places and scenes across Jeju Province, it captured in a short video how students learn and grow in their local communities.
The education office said the video was highly praised for its message and composition, which interpreted Jeju's natural and everyday spaces as places of learning.
Excellence awards went to "Finding Myself in Jeju's Freedom" by Song Yu-rim of Pyoseon High School, "Our Sketchbook, Jeju Education" by Go Gyu-rim and Bu So-yeon of Tamna Middle School, and "Jeju Is Our Classroom" by Moon Jeong-won, Oh Min-ha, Oh Min-geon and Go Na-seul of Jeju National University Affiliated Elementary School.
Merit awards were given to "Capturing Jeju!" by Jeju Jungang High School, "Boomerang of Happiness" by Jeju Girls' Middle School, and "Doljharubang's Jeju Education Tour" by Donggwang Elementary School.
Encouragement awards went to "The Dream of Jeju Education," "Jeju Learning Together, Tomorrow We Build Together," "Your Growth, My Joy: Jeju Running Together," "Today's Learning, Tomorrow's Jeju," "Jeju Education Mini Series: Student Theater," and "Welcome! I'll Show You Jeju Schools!"

The subjects of the videos were also diverse. From works that viewed Jeju's nature, history and culture as learning spaces to stories about school life, student growth, ecology and the environment, and digital education, the students' real experiences of Jeju education were expressed through their own stories and visual language.
A key feature of this contest was that it showed schools and education through videos planned and produced directly by students, rather than through explanations by the education office or teachers.
The students filmed their schools and neighborhoods, built storylines, and chose the scenes they believed were meaningful in Jeju education. In that sense, the students who receive education policy also became its recorders and content creators.
The provincial office of education plans to share the winning works with residents by releasing them on SNS and the official YouTube channel.
The grand prize included an award from the superintendent of education and a cash prize of 1 million won. Excellence awards received 800,000 won each, merit awards 400,000 won each, and encouragement awards 200,000 won each.
Im Hee-sook, public affairs director at the Jeju Provincial Office of Education, said, "We will share the value of Jeju education with residents through videos that capture students' perspectives and creative stories."
