Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 682, Nearly 3,000 Missing; South Korean Rapid Response Team Says It Could Not Confirm Any Survivors

On the fourth day of massive flooding in the Himalayan region along the Nepal-China border on the 29th local time, the combined death toll in the two countries rose to 682. The number of missing people was approaching 3,000.
Meanwhile, South Korea's rapid response team reportedly failed to confirm any survivors after two helicopter search missions.

According to foreign media outlets including AP and AFP, the total death toll has reached 682.
Nepalese authorities said 675 people had died, while the death toll in China's Tibet Autonomous Region also rose to seven.
The total death toll stood at 579 through the previous day, but it rose by more than 100 as bodies were recovered one after another.
The number of missing people jumped by about 500 in a single day in Nepal to 2,426, while 554 people were missing in Tibet, bringing the total to 2,980.
Among the missing, about 500 are foreigners, including people from India and the United States.

Nine South Koreans, including six Doosan Enerbility employees and three Korea South-East Power employees dispatched to the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Nepal, remain out of contact.
A joint rapid response team sent by the South Korean government searched the area from the air twice on a locally chartered helicopter, but found no results.
A team official said they conducted a visual search while flying over the area where the nine missing people are believed to be, but access was difficult because the terrain was densely wooded and steep.
The team also analyzed video footage obtained during the flights, but said there was nothing significantly different from what was seen during the visual search. Nepalese military authorities also searched several locations, including the same site, but were unable to find any survivors.
The rapid response team plans to use a private helicopter again on the 30th to search nearby areas outside the route used on the 29th.
