[Financial News] President Donald Trump announced on the 28th local time that the United States had reached an oil deal with Venezuela. The agreement gives the United States majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's confirmed oil reserves.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that "the United States has just reached an agreement on the largest oil deal in world history with Venezuela."
He added that "Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth worked closely with Venezuela's respected interim President Delcy Rodríguez, and through partnerships with private companies, secured majority U.S. control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's confirmed oil reserves without costing the U.S. taxpayer a dime." The remarks are understood to mean that the Venezuelan government and U.S. oil companies have reached an agreement over drilling rights in Venezuela.
Venezuela, long one of Latin America's most anti-U.S. countries, holds the world's largest proven oil reserves. After U.S. forces successfully carried out a military operation to oust former President Nicolás Maduro Moros in January at Trump's direction, Venezuela has cooperated with the Trump administration.
Attention is now focused on whether global oil prices, which surged because of the war with Iran, and energy prices in the United States will actually come down.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that "this historic deal, which will more than double the United States' oil reserves, will greatly increase oil supplies and significantly lower gasoline prices for all Americans for a long time to come, while helping Venezuela move toward tremendous success and great prosperity."
He added that "this deal will further solidify the already growing relationship between Venezuela and the United States."
