[Financial News] U.S. stocks were flat on the 28th, ahead of Federal Reserve System (Fed) Chair Kevin Warsh's first keynote speech.
As of 9:34 a.m. that day at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up 109.98 points, or 0.21%, from the previous session at 53,679.42. The S&P 500 Index rose 7.48 points, or 0.1%, to 7,738.47, while the NASDAQ Composite Index fell 6.33 points, or 0.02%, to 26,535.02.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City began the Federal Reserve's annual economic symposium, the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on the 27th. Warsh, who took office in May, is scheduled to deliver his first Jackson Hole keynote speech at 11 p.m. on the 28th, Korea time. Market participants are watching his outlook for interest-rate policy closely, as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said this month that he would intervene more aggressively in the market by expanding Treasury buybacks.
By sector, communications and consumer discretionary stocks were strong in the U.S. market on the 28th, while healthcare and real estate stocks were weak.
European markets also advanced on the same day. The EURO STOXX 50 Index was trading at 6,473.88, up 0.77% from the previous session. The FTSE 100 Index and the CAC 40 rose 0.15% and 0.97%, respectively. Germany's DAX Index gained 0.54%.
International oil prices fell. The October West Texas Intermediate crude oil (WTI) contract traded on the 28th was down 1.27% from the previous session at $82.47 per barrel.
