Death Toll from Major Nepal-China Floods Rises to 543 After Three Days

[Financial News] The death toll from a massive flood in the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China has topped 500 just three days after the disaster. With more than 1,500 people still missing, the number of casualties is expected to rise further.
According to AFP and other foreign media on the 28th, Nepal Police said 538 people had been killed so far in the flood that swept through parts of Bagmati Province in northern Nepal on the 26th. In Gyirong County in Xigaze, in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, five more people died in landslides triggered by the flooding, bringing the total death toll in both countries to 543. The number of dead, which stood at 362 through the previous day, appears to have jumped by more than 180 as bodies were recovered one after another in Bagmati Province.
The missing include 977 people in Nepal and 558 in Tibet, for a total of 1,535. More than 500 foreigners are believed to be among them. Nine South Korean nationals from Korea South-East Power and Doosan Enerbility, who were taking part in a local hydropower plant project, are also still out of contact.
