Wanju County's birth rate rises for four straight years, driven by housing environment improvements

[Financial News, Wanju = Reporter Kang In] Wanju County in North Jeolla Province is drawing attention as its total fertility rate has risen for four consecutive years.
According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics on the 28th, Wanju's total fertility rate stood at 1.2 last year.
The total fertility rate is the average number of children a woman is expected to have.
Wanju's total fertility rate has continued to climb, from 0.87 in 2022 to 0.89 in 2023, 1.09 in 2024, and 1.2 in 2025.
That is well above the national average of 0.8 and the North Jeolla Province average of 0.85 last year.
The number of births also rose to 627 last year, up 83, or 15.3%, from 544 a year earlier. Over the same period, the national birth increase rate was 6.7%, while North Jeolla Province posted 3.9%.
A county official said, "We believe that housing environment improvements in areas such as Sambong District and Ungok District, along with support policies including wedding congratulatory payments and childbirth incentives, have contributed to the increase in births."
