[Financial News] Front-line customs officers who arrested a distributor that evaded hundreds of millions of won in duties by exploiting loopholes in the small-value duty-free system for overseas direct purchases, and who tightly blocked drug smuggling at the border, have been selected as outstanding customs employees. They were recognized for improving the effectiveness of customs border management by not only catching violations on site, but also preemptively targeting data-driven intelligence analysis and increasingly sophisticated tax evasion schemes.
Incheon Airport Customs announced on the 28th that it had selected Kim Jun-kyung as the 'August Incheon Airport Customs Officer' and Jeong Ye-jin as the 'Drug Enforcement King of the Month.'
Kim Jun-kyung, chosen as the August customs officer, restored order in distribution by uncovering a large portal platform vendor who abused the duty-free benefit applied to small overseas direct-purchase items for personal use and falsely declared import prices below the exemption threshold to evade 230 million won in customs duties.
Jeong Ye-jin, named Drug Enforcement King, preemptively blocked the smuggling routes of four narcotics cases, including ketamine and methamphetamine, with a net weight of about 2.5 kg, through two months of data-driven intelligence analysis. Lee Hee-sang, who uncovered 2.23 kg of methamphetamine hidden on a traveler’s body, and Jeong Hye-hyeon, who exposed a method of concealing 335.6 g of drugs separately in checked baggage and on the body, were also selected as August outstanding employees.
By work category, Park Hyeong-in, who introduced a simple authentication certificate for refunds of overpaid duties by individual importers and improved civil service convenience, was selected as an outstanding employee in general administration. Woo Ju-hee, who led a joint crackdown on companies suspected of abusing personal customs clearance codes and bringing in counterfeit goods, was chosen in express cargo clearance. Lee Ju-ri and Lee Seon-min, who blocked the illegal export of foreign currency through close cooperation and precise screening, were selected in traveler clearance.
An Incheon Airport Customs official said, "We will continue to identify and reward outstanding employees who demonstrate proactive administration and expertise in order to improve customs administration efficiency and respond to sophisticated illegal activities that threaten border security."
