Ruling Party Formalizes Special Prosecutor for Fabricated Prosecution; Will Lee's Indictments Be Dropped?

[Financial News, Seoul/Incheon = Kim Yun-ho, Lee Hae-ram]The Democratic Party of Korea on the 28th formally moved to introduce a special prosecutor to investigate alleged fabricated prosecutions by the prosecution service. It is also reviewing whether to seek dismissal of related indictments. Attention is now on whether the move could lead to the dismissal of all five trials involving President Lee Jae Myung.
Seo Young-kyo, chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly, and Rep. Kim Seung-won, the ruling party's chief floor deputy, told reporters on the 28th during a lawmakers' workshop at Inspire Hotel & Resort in Yeongjong District, Incheon, that they would launch the Special Prosecutor for Fabricated Prosecution.
Kim said, "We have decided to launch a special prosecutor over the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's fabricated prosecutions and the Board of Audit and Inspection's illegal audits, and the timing will be set through consultations by the party leadership." He added, "As for the dismissal of indictments, we have gathered opinions, but it is not something I can discuss at this stage."
The special prosecutor had been discussed since the beginning of the year, but it was put on hold amid concerns that it could hurt public sentiment ahead of the June 3 local elections. With the pro-Lee Jae Myung Kim Min-seok leadership now in place and no nationwide elections scheduled until the 2028 general election, the party has decided to push ahead again.
Seo said, "We had agreed to discuss the special prosecutor after the local elections, and now that a new leadership has been formed, we will discuss it together." She added, "There is a shared view that prosecutors have not been properly punished for countless wrongdoings, so they must be held clearly accountable."
