Review of Sejong-Gongju and Jochiwon BRT projects held, with talks on links to Cheongju Airport

[Financial News] The National Agency for Administrative City Construction reviewed the completion and operation plans for the Sejong-Gongju and Sejong-Jochiwon Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines and discussed ways to push ahead with new BRT routes in the Chungcheong region. It also consulted on measures to improve public transit links to make travel easier for users of Cheongju International Airport.
According to the Agency on the 28th, the 34th Transportation Council for the Multifunctional Administrative City Metropolitan Planning Area, held that day at Cheongju International Airport, was attended by officials from the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Daejeon Metropolitan City, Sejong City, North Chungcheong Province Government, and South Chungcheong Province.
At the meeting, participants checked the progress and future operation plans for the Sejong-Gongju BRT, which is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, and the Sejong-Jochiwon BRT, which is targeted for completion by the end of next year. The attending agencies agreed to continue cooperating during the completion and operating preparations.
The meeting also covered the direction for new routes. The discussion included the National Assembly Sejong, Cheongju Dongnam, Cheonan Phase 2, and Gongju Phase 2 BRT projects, which were reflected in the 2nd Comprehensive Plan for Bus Rapid Transit Systems (2026–2030) established and announced by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission at the end of last month.
Participants also shared updates on the progress and follow-up plans for the Chungcheong Metropolitan Union's study on standard guidelines for regional BRT in the Chungcheong region. The guidelines are being prepared to ensure that BRT construction tasks, including approval of implementation plans, proceed under consistent standards.
They also reviewed the current state of public transportation connecting Cheongju International Airport with major cities nationwide and discussed ways to improve links between transport modes. After the meeting, they inspected airport facilities and operations, and agreed on the need to strengthen connecting transport networks to boost airport use.
Shin Yong-han, Governor of North Chungcheong Province, asked that the necessary measures for improving access to Cheongju Airport and advancing related projects smoothly be reflected in the metropolitan transportation improvement plan.
Choi Hyeong-wook, deputy commissioner of the Agency, said, "Going forward, we will work closely with relevant agencies to strengthen links with major transport hubs, including international airports, so that the Chungcheong region can be connected as a single transportation and daily living zone in the new administrative capital area, and we will continue improving the efficient metropolitan transportation system."
