Gender Equality Through the True Story of NASA Women Scientists... Free Screening of 'Hidden Figures' in Jeju

[Financial News Jeju = Reporter Jung Yong-bok] Jeju will host an event that revisits the meaning of gender equality and diversity through the true story of women scientists who broke through barriers of race and gender and led space development at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The Jeju Content Promotion Institute, headed by Kang Min-bu, will hold "Gender Equality, a Story to Watch Together" on Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at the institute's BeIN Theater. The event combines a screening of the film "Hidden Figures" with a GV, or talk with the audience, to mark Gender Equality Week.
The event was organized as part of a specialized project to promote gender-equality culture by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Gender Equality Council in 2026. It focuses on sharing the values of gender equality, inclusion and diversity with the local community through film.
"Hidden Figures" is based on the true story of Black women scientists who worked at NASA in the United States. Set in an era when discrimination against women and Black people coexisted, the film portrays the challenges and achievements of women who played key roles in space development with their skills in mathematics and engineering.
The film also highlights institutional discrimination and problems in organizational culture that cannot be explained by individual ability alone. The Jeju Content Promotion Institute plans to connect the story in the film with the gender-equality and diversity challenges facing local communities today.
A post-screening talk will follow. Goh Myeong-hee, head of Our Counseling Center, will host the session, while cartoonist Son So-jeong and film director Ko Eun-ju will join as guests. They will examine the film's message from the perspective of women content creators and discuss with the audience how a culture of gender equality can spread in everyday life and the content industry.
The event will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and anyone aged 12 or older may attend free of charge. Seats will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis after advance registration.
Rather than stopping at a film screening, the Jeju Content Promotion Institute has designed the program to combine creators and audiences in conversation, allowing gender-equality issues to be discussed naturally within cultural content.
Jeong Mi-jeong, a senior researcher at the Jeju Content Promotion Institute, said, "I hope this becomes an opportunity to see gender equality as a value that we should practice together in our daily lives," adding, "I hope the local community will share the message of gender equality, inclusion and diversity through the film and the conversation."
