Gumi City Puts All-Out Effort Into Emerging as a New Industrial Hub

[Financial News, Gumi = Kim Jang-wook] Gumi is making every effort to emerge as a new industrial hub in the Republic of Korea.
According to Gumi, the government has selected four industries — Artificial Intelligence (AI) robots, semiconductor materials and components, rechargeable batteries, and future mobility — as the future growth engines of the Daegu–Gyeongbuk region. It has now begun a full-scale push to develop Daegu–Gyeongbuk into an industrial base centered on advanced materials, components, and AI robots.
In particular, the city said the selection of Daegu–Gyeongbuk as a growth engine was not a sudden change, but the result of its long-standing strategy to transform its industrial structure and foster future growth drivers in line with the direction of national industrial policy.
Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, "The industries selected as growth engines for Daegu–Gyeongbuk are closely aligned with the future growth drivers Gumi has been preparing for a long time." He added, "Based on the advanced strategic industry special zone for semiconductors and the defense innovation cluster, we are newly combining AI and the robot industry. With Samsung Group's large-scale investment added on top, Gumi's industrial ecosystem is undergoing a qualitative transformation."
Gumi has already been working to build an advanced industry ecosystem based on the semiconductor advanced strategic industry special zone and the defense innovation cluster. It has also gradually laid the groundwork for the future robot industry by enacting ordinances to foster the robot industry, declaring a vision for an advanced robot convergence city, establishing the Robot Vocational Innovation Center, and applying for designation as a special zone for the national advanced strategic robot industry.
The city is responding quickly so that Samsung Group's large-scale investment announced in July, worth a total of 19 trillion won, can spread throughout the local economy. Led by the mayor, it launched an Advanced Industry Innovation TF Task Force of about 70 people, centered on six task forces covering robots, semiconductors, defense, AI, AI transformation (AX), rechargeable batteries, and industrial park development. The city has also built a response system for government policy and corporate investment.
Gumi also plans to go beyond simply attracting production facilities from large companies. It aims to create an industrial ecosystem that supports local robot companies from technology development to commercialization and market entry. The city also wants to build a virtuous cycle in which investments by Samsung Group and other major companies lead to the growth of local small and mid-sized firms and the creation of new jobs.
It also plans to transform existing industrial parks into future manufacturing complexes based on AI and develop Gumi into a key hub in the Republic of Korea's AI robot supply chain.
Mayor Kim added, "The most important thing is to ensure that national policy and corporate investment are actually connected to business growth and jobs for citizens." He said, "We will expand major companies' investments and local firms' participation in the supply chain, while closely linking research and development, talent training, and industrial park development."
