The new releases stand out for presenting a wide range of messages, from resolving everyday conflicts in modern society to healing children's emotions, in a distinctive format.
The most eye-catching title is Home Sweet Home by author Kim Do-gyeong, which won the grand prize for the first time in five years. The book humorously tackles the issue of noise between floors and food odors, two common sources of conflict in apartment complexes and other shared housing, through a conversation and mutual understanding between a bear living upstairs and a mouse living downstairs. Designed as a horizontally long book that opens upward and downward, it visually contrasts the spaces above and below at a glance.
The other winning titles also break away from the conventional picture book format with creative designs. Jjajang Pangpang uses a two-way reading structure, where readers can start from the front to follow the making of jajang sauce or from the back to follow the making of hand-pulled noodles, while conveying the cooking process through vivid onomatopoeia and mimetic words. Hansumi visualizes the invisible emotion of a sigh as a cute character, helping children examine and release heavy feelings on their own.
Woongjin ThinkBig plans to continue discovering talented new writers and strengthening its own book intellectual property competitiveness through the Woongjin Junior Contest, which brings together active writers, children's literature critics, and planners.
