Shinsegae Department Store to Cooperate with Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City on Ecological Conservation and Regional Coexistence

[Financial News] Shinsegae Department Store is joining forces with Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City to protect the ecological environment downstream of the Tamjin River and promote regional coexistence.
According to Shinsegae Department Store on the 27th, the company signed a business agreement for biodiversity conservation and regional coexistence at the business room of the Gwangju Government Complex, with Park Joo-hyung, CEO of Shinsegae, Min Hyung-bae, mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, and others in attendance.
Under the agreement, both sides will carry out ecosystem conservation projects centered on the downstream area of the Tamjin River, which is visited by migratory birds such as whooper swans. The company, local residents, civic groups, and local governments will each take on roles such as funding support, on-site activities, and administrative assistance.
Shinsegae Department Store will provide 200 million won over the next two years to help create wildlife habitats and restore damaged areas downstream of the Tamjin River. Local residents will offer winter fallow farmland as habitats and feeding grounds for migratory birds, while civic groups will be responsible for habitat creation and ecological monitoring.
The company will also use its distribution network to help expand sales channels for locally produced eco-friendly agricultural and marine products. Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City will provide administrative support so the related projects can continue to operate.
Park Joo-hyung, CEO of Shinsegae, said, "It is especially meaningful that Shinsegae Department Store, after working with the region to develop Gwangju's retail industry, is now directly taking part in protecting the ecology of the Honam region. Going forward, Shinsegae Department Store will continue to make large-scale investments and fulfill its responsibilities and role as a landmark suited to Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City."
Shinsegae Department Store is also pushing ahead with 'The Great Gwangju,' a mixed-use development project for the Gwangcheon Terminal area in cooperation with Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City. The goal is to begin expanding the department store in 2029, then gradually build a modernized terminal, a luxury hotel, a performance venue, and office facilities, with full completion targeted for 2033.
Earlier, Shinsegae Department Store signed a memorandum of understanding in February for a 3 trillion won investment in the Gwangcheon Terminal mixed-use development project.
