[Financial News] The mother of singer Jang Yoon-jeong admitted to taking 31 million won by falsely claiming it was for an investment related to her daughter. The Prosecution Service requested an 18-month prison sentence, citing her prior convictions for similar crimes.
On the 27th, the Criminal Division 2, single-judge panel of the Seoul Eastern District Court held the first hearing for Yu, the mother of Jang, who was indicted and detained on fraud charges.
According to the Prosecution Service, Yu is accused of deceiving the victim from September 2024 to August last year by saying that money could be made through an investment related to her daughter, singer Jang, and receiving a total of 31 million won in three transfers.
Yu's side admitted all of the charges on the day. The Prosecution Service asked the court to sentence her to 18 months in prison, saying, "Please consider that she has previously been sentenced to prison for a similar scheme and that the amount of damage is not small."
Yu's lawyer said, "The defendant admits all of the charges and is deeply remorseful," adding, "She has committed the same type of crime again despite having a prior conviction, so she has nothing to say."
On the motive for the crime, the lawyer explained, "She needed living expenses and credit card payments, and most of the money she obtained was used for living expenses." The lawyer also asked for leniency, noting that Yu is taking medication for a cervical disc problem, lumbar spinal stenosis, and diabetes.
In her final statement, Yu shed tears and apologized, saying, "I am truly sorry to the victim and their family." The court is scheduled to hand down its verdict on Yu at 2 p.m. on Sept. 10.
