[Financial News] Pearl Abyss has unveiled the development technology and production know-how behind the vast open world of 'Crimson Desert' to global game developers.
Pearl Abyss said on the 27th that it took part in the global game developers' conference 'gamescom dev 2026' and introduced the open-world production system and development process behind Crimson Desert.
Ahn Geun-tae, head of the art level team, along with Kim Jinhwan and Yoon Jinho, heads of the game engine graphics team, spoke at the session. They shared how the team created the continent of 'Pywel,' the setting of Crimson Desert, with consistent quality and designed it to encourage natural exploration.
The session drew 320 pre-registrations, more than double the venue's capacity of 150. Developers from global game companies including Sony Interactive Entertainment CTO Luis Villegas, Capcom executive vice president Kota Fukasawa, CD PROJEKT RED, Guerrilla Games, Nintendo Co., Ltd., Sandbox Interactive, and Unknown Worlds Entertainment attended, underscoring strong interest.
What Pearl Abyss emphasized was not simply a large space, but a 'playable world' that users can explore themselves. Instead of reproducing real natural environments exactly as they are, the company adjusted the density and placement of environmental elements with user movement and exploration as the priority.
To efficiently build the massive open world, Pearl Abyss combined automation with manual work. Elements that had to be created repeatedly, such as vegetation and terrain, were automated based on set rules, while content that directly affects the player's experience, such as landmarks, quests, and events, was created and managed by developers themselves.
The company's in-house BlackSpace Engine was also introduced as a key technology for realizing a large-scale open world. By loading only the space and data needed according to the user's location and field of view, the engine made the vast world feel like one continuous space while managing performance demands.
In particular, towers and villages visible in the distance were not treated as mere background. They were designed so that players could actually travel there and explore them, turning the scenery in front of them into another journey.
The company also implemented environments that change with time and weather. Rain, snow, and wind alter the surroundings, while grass and trees react to the player's movement and attacks. In other words, if a player stands on a ridge in Pywel, looks out into the distance, and feels like they simply want to keep walking, that is exactly the moment Pearl Abyss's developers hoped to create.
Meanwhile, at the gamescom pre-show 'Gamescom Opening Night Live,' Pearl Abyss unveiled a trailer for 'Crimson Desert Enhanced,' which features improved storytelling, five new voice-over languages, and Arabic subtitles.
