Three Drug Suspects Who Fled Overseas to Evade Investigation Repatriated and Indicted

[Financial News] Suppliers who smuggled drugs and then fled overseas to evade investigators have been repatriated to South Korea and sent to trial.
The Joint Government Investigation Headquarters for Drug Crimes at the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office said on the 27th that it had repatriated drug smuggling suspects A, 40, B, 22, a Vietnamese national, and C, 37, a Korean American, since April and indicted them in custody on charges including violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
A is accused of bringing 1.31 kilograms of philopon, worth 131 million won, into South Korea from Thailand in April. B is accused of importing 247 MDMA tablets and 129 grams of ketamine, worth 34 million won, between June and August 2025. C is accused of importing 600 MDMA tablets, 16.17 grams of cocaine and 28.71 grams of ketamine, worth 33 million won, from the United States in August 2018.
They fled overseas after their drug smuggling scheme was uncovered and investigators began looking into their accomplices, but they were later arrested in Thailand, the Netherlands and France, respectively.
To track down ringleaders who flee abroad or remain overseas while continuing to smuggle drugs, the task force is operating an international cooperation team that works with prosecutors, police officers and NIS investigators dispatched to Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.
Through this effort, D, 47, who imported 4.4 kilograms of philopon worth 448 million won from Mexico to South Korea, was also arrested with local police in Laos, and 1 kilogram of heroin found at D's residence was seized. The task force is also preparing to repatriate D, officials said.
The task force added that it has also identified the personal information and crimes of 14 other drug smuggling and distribution ringleaders who have been staying overseas and hiding behind anonymity on social networking services, and is pursuing their repatriation through Interpol Red Notices and extradition requests.
A prosecution official said, "Since our launch, we have selected the highest-priority drug suspects who fled overseas and focused on bringing them back." The official added, "We will continue to root out drug ringleaders operating abroad and block the inflow of drugs into South Korea through strict punishment."
