K-AI alliance reshaped around 'security AI' as NAVER Cloud teams up with LG CNS

[Financial News] NAVER Cloud and LG CNS are taking on the government-led challenge of developing an artificial intelligence foundation model specialized in cybersecurity. Their plan is to build an AI model tailored to South Korea's cyber threat environment by using their own technologies, from the model itself to infrastructure, security, and data.
NAVER Cloud said on the 27th that it will form a consortium with LG CNS to participate in the "specialized AI foundation model development (cybersecurity sector)" project led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA).
The consortium will join the project under the theme of "development of an AI foundation model to internalize national cyber defense capabilities." Its goal is to combine technical capabilities spanning AI models, infrastructure, security, and data to develop a model optimized for South Korea's security environment.
NAVER Cloud will draw on its experience in developing and commercializing proprietary foundation models, as well as in building AI models in closed-network and on-premises environments. It also plans to apply its experience operating foundation models in closed and on-premises settings in sectors that require a high level of security, such as nuclear and finance.
The company will also leverage its experience in monitoring and defending against cyber threats accumulated while operating NAVER services, along with data encryption and isolation technologies based on the Cloud Security Assurance Program (CSAP).
LG CNS will tap its cybersecurity specialist teams, including the Red Team, Blue Team, and AI security team, as well as its experience in AI transformation projects across industries. It plans to use telecom-network-specific data from group affiliates such as LG Uplus for model training and carry out demonstrations in real security environments to further improve the model's functions and performance.
The consortium includes the two companies, security firms with offensive and detection technologies, universities specializing in AI safety and vulnerabilities, and research and public institutions, for a total of 33 industry-academia-research organizations. Each institution will take part in securing security data, model development, demonstration, and verification.
Yuwon Kim, CEO of NAVER Cloud, said, "As cyber threats become more advanced through the use of AI, internalizing our defense system with proprietary AI technology is a core element of national security." He added, "Based on our real-world security capabilities, we will develop the 'sovereign security AI' that best understands South Korea's cyber threat environment and take the country's security capabilities to the next level."
