Kakao Entertainment Builds Industry's First Copyright Protection System, 'Dark Chaser'

[Financial News] Kakao Entertainment Corp. is upgrading its response system against the illegal distribution of webtoons and web novels by leveraging its in-house, comprehensive copyright protection system, Dark Chaser. It is currently monitoring about 16,000 intellectual properties (IPs) worldwide around the clock and analyzes infringement patterns to detect signs of new leaks and repeated violations at an early stage.
Kakao Entertainment released the 9th Anti-Illegal Distribution Response White Paper on the 27th, which covers Dark Chaser and its achievements.
Dark Chaser is a comprehensive copyright protection system developed in-house based on the anti-illegal distribution data and technology Kakao Entertainment has accumulated. It connects the entire process, from content detection and reporting to checking processing results, domain tracking, and response history management, improving both speed and accuracy.
In particular, it analyzes infringement patterns and links between illegal sites to identify repeated violations and early signs of new leaks. It has also implemented the TTT strategy, which stands for targeting illegal sites, tracing operators, and taking them down through legal action, first introduced in last year's 7th white paper. Kakao Entertainment has also advanced its own watermark technology to identify the original leaker and prevent repeated leaks.
Launched as a beta version late last year, Dark Chaser has since been gradually upgraded and is now providing around-the-clock monitoring of about 16,000 Kakao Entertainment webtoon and web novel IPs across the globe. Multilingual keyword detection, domain change tracking, and repeated infringement pattern analysis are all managed in an integrated dashboard.
Kakao Entertainment plans to continue upgrading Dark Chaser and further strengthen its leak prevention features and copyright protection guidance for creators and content providers (CPs).
The company is also seeing results in blocking illegal webtoons and web novels worldwide. In the first half of this year, Kakao Entertainment blocked a total of 126.16 million cases of illegal content worldwide, up 25% from 101.12 million in the second half of last year. Since launching its Illegal Distribution Response Team in 2021, it has removed more than 1.1 billion illegal webtoon and web novel items globally through June this year.
